Goalpara is the district headquarters of Goalpara district in Assam. The Koch Rajbongshis and Muslims mainly comprise of the population of Goalpara. Goalpariya language is widely spoken in the place. Goalpariya is a dialect of Assamese and Bengali language.

History of Goalpara

The name Goalpara comes from the word ‘gwaltippika’ which means the village of the milkmen. Goalpara served as the capital of the state of Bhaskar Varman. The British ruled the place from 1765. The region was also ruled by the Koch Rajbongshis. It was a princely state then.

Geography and Climate of Goalpara

Goalpara is situated 134 km from Guwahati. The town is situated at the bank of the Brahmaputra River. It is located at 26.17 degree north and 90.62 degree east. The town is located at an elevation of 114 feet. To the east of Goalpara is the Kamrup district, to the west is Dhubri district, Bongaigaon falls to the north and Meghalaya borders the south of Goalpara.

The climate of Goalpara remains moderate throughout the year. Goalpara has tropical monsoon climatic condition. During summer the maximum the temperature remains around 30 degrees. And during winter the maximum temperature remains around 23 degrees. Monsoon is accompanied by heavy rainfall.

Economy of Goalpara

The major source of economy of the town comes from agriculture. Crops like paddy, gram, banana and potato are sown. Tea cultivation is another source of economy of Goalpara. There are two tea gardens in Goalpara. Income of the town comes from tea as well.
